The twins will arrive in Riyadh today, Sunday, at exactly two o’clock in the evening, before they are transferred to the King Abdulaziz Medical City for the National Guard in Riyadh.
This operation comes within a series of operations to separate conjoined twins conducted by the Saudi Program for Conjoined Twins, making it one of the largest programs for separating conjoined twins in the world.
The case of conjoined twins “Siamese”
Siamese twins are known to occur when the fetus divides after 13-15 days. It is a rare condition called “identical twins” that share a placenta and amniotic sac.
According to the World Health Organization, its incidence is 1 in 100,000 live births, and female fetuses are more affected than male fetuses.
Conjoined twins are identical twins whose bodies were joined in the womb and remain physically joined, often in the chest, abdomen, or pelvis area.
Operations to separate twins from the head are considered one of the most complex operations, and the rate of stillbirths is estimated at about 60%.
To date, there is a lack of timely and reliable data in this regard.
While scientists attribute the birth of conjoined twins to several reasons, including genetic and health, and some environmental related to environmental and food pollution.
Saudi program efforts
The Kingdom is making pioneering efforts in the Saudi program for separating conjoined twins, which has achieved international acclaim and major successes since its launch in 1990.
During 33 years, the program conducted 61 operations to separate conjoined twins in the Kingdom, and medical evaluation of 139 cases from 26 countries in the world, with the generous support of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Chairman of the Council of Ministers.
