International Federation of Journalists: 122 journalists and media professionals will be killed around the world in 2024

The International Federation of Journalists announced the killing of 122 journalists and media professionals, including 14 women, during the year 2024.

The International Federation of Journalists, in a statement today, expressed its regret that the year 2024 is one of the bloodiest years for journalists, reiterating its determination that the United Nations should adopt an international convention to protect journalists as a matter of urgency.

The Middle East and the Arab world witnessed the largest number of journalists and media professionals killed in the world, and the number in the region reached 77 journalists and media professionals who were killed. The war in Gaza and Lebanon shed light on the suffering of the Palestinians. 64 Palestinian journalists were killed, and 6 Lebanese journalists and one Syrian journalist were killed. Which represents 58% of the total number of journalists killed around the world in 2024.

It is noteworthy that since the outbreak of war in Gaza on October 7, 2023, at least 147 Palestinian journalists have been killed, making this country one of the most dangerous countries for journalism in modern history.

During the year 2024, 22 journalists and media professionals were killed in the Asia-Pacific region, 10 journalists in Africa, 9 in the Americas, and 4 in Europe.

During the same year, 516 journalists were imprisoned, which represents a significant increase compared to 2023, in which 427 journalists were imprisoned, and 2022, in which 375 journalists and media professionals were imprisoned. China came in first place with 135 journalists behind bars.
