Austria: Gas supplies for domestic and industrial use are safe

Vienna, 1st January / WAM / Austria has confirmed that gas supplies for domestic and industrial use are safe, after the passage of Russian gas through Ukraine was halted today due to the expiration of the contract between the Russian “Gazprom” and the Ukrainian “Naftogaz” companies at the beginning of the year 2025.

Austrian Energy Minister Leonora Gevsler said in a press statement that her country had taken the necessary precautions and prepared well for this situation, which was not surprising.

The company that operates gas distribution networks in Austria, AGGM, announced that the arrival of Russian gas from Slovakia to the Austrian Baumgarten station has been stopped, stressing that domestic gas supplies will not be affected or that there will be any change in prices as a result.

Alphonse Haber, a member of the Board of Directors of the authority responsible for the electricity and natural gas industry, “E-Control,” explained that the missing quantities of gas were compensated with similar amounts from Germany and Italy.

It is worth noting that Austria annually consumes about 76 terawatt-hours of gas, and Austrian storage facilities, which are currently 79% full, accommodate about 80 terawatt-hours. Austria can also import up to 185 terawatt-hours annually through Germany and Italy, according to data from the Ministry of Energy.
