Possible ban on fireworks in Germany and introduction of new regulations

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke on Friday about imposing a possible ban on fireworks in the country.
Schulz said there was a need to enact clear new regulations in the wake of injuries and deaths resulting from the use of fireworks during New Year’s celebrations in Germany.

Fireworks in Germany

“We should have clear rules about which fireworks can be used,” Schulz said during a visit to the local fire brigade in the Berlin suburb of Kleinmachno.
He stressed that strict action would be taken against all those who do not comply with the law, saying: “This is the right way to continue.”
Iris Spranger, Interior Minister in Berlin, called for major new nationwide restrictions on the use of fireworks that would allow local governments to limit explosions to designated areas.

Regulations for the use of fireworks

A spokesman for German Interior Minister Nancy Weiser said that Weiser continues to push for stricter regulations and fireworks-free zones, but she opposes a general ban on fireworks.

More than a quarter of a million Germans had signed an online petition, demanding a complete ban on fireworks throughout the country, for private use, after New Year’s Eve, which was marred by deaths and injuries.
By noon on Friday, about 270,000 people had supported the petition, which was launched by the Berlin branch of the German Police Federation, two years ago.

Fireworks victims

At least five people were killed and dozens were injured during New Year’s celebrations in Germany, where, unlike many other countries, fireworks can be purchased in the days before New Year’s Eve for private use.
Customs in the city of Hanover in northern Germany confiscated several tons of various illegal fireworks coming from Poland.
Customs stated that the confiscated fireworks are dangerous and unlicensed, and are not limited to the usual types used in New Year celebrations, such as “crackers.”
She continued, “We strongly warn against ordering fireworks from such merchants, stressing that purchasing fireworks without the necessary permits poses a major health risk and is subject to the law.”
