After his arrest failed… a court in Seoul extends the arrest warrant for President Yeol

A Seoul court on Tuesday extended the arrest warrant for suspended South Korean President Yeon Seok-yeol at the request of South Korean anti-corruption authorities.
The High-Level Officials Corruption Investigation Bureau is now expected to try to implement the arrest warrant again, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported, citing local officials.
The original arrest warrant expired at midnight on Monday (1500 GMT), after bureau officials failed to arrest Yoon over his failed attempt to impose martial law on December 3 during a budget dispute with the opposition.

Failure to execute the arrest warrant

Last Friday, dozens of agents from the High-Official Corruption Investigation Bureau tried for more than 5 hours to execute the arrest warrant.
However, about 200 members of the army and security services stood in their way in the area of the president’s residence.
The FBI operation was eventually canceled for security reasons.

Yoon, 64, remains at his residence, which is protected by high walls and surrounded by dozens of members of the Presidential Security Service.
Hundreds of his supporters also protested in front of the entrance to the building.

Abuse of power

In mid-December, members of parliament suspended Yoon from his position until further notice, on charges of abuse of power and committing treason, while the Constitutional Court reviews the decision.
Currently, former Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mook is in charge of state affairs.
