Amazon is spending $11 billion to enhance its strength in artificial intelligence

Amazon.com said that its computing division, Amazon Web Services, or AWS, is planning a huge investment in the billions to expand the architecture of new technology, especially those that support the field of artificial intelligence, according to what was reported by the American Yahoo Finance network.

Amazon’s investments in artificial intelligence

Amazon wants to support its expansion massively by investing about $11 billion to expand its infrastructure in Georgia to support cloud computing and artificial intelligence technologies.

The trend of giant technology companies

Major technology companies are investing billions of dollars in AI, highlighting the growing need for powerful data centers and advanced infrastructure to support AI-driven innovations and cloud services.

A few days ago, the giant Microsoft announced plans to invest about $80 billion in fiscal year 2025 to develop data centers to train artificial intelligence models and deploy artificial intelligence applications and applications based on them.

Huge computing resources

Artificial intelligence applications from machine learning to generative modeling require massive computing resources, and this is driving demand for specialized data centers that enable technology companies to interconnect thousands of chips in clusters at extreme data and operational complexity.
“Investments in Butts and Douglas counties are expected to create hundreds of jobs and strengthen Georgia’s position as a hub for cutting-edge digital innovation,” Amazon said, adding that this is expected to create “at least 550 new highly skilled jobs.”

Artificial intelligence consumption of electricity

But the cost of technology is not small and does not seem justified to some analysts, especially since its return will not appear strong enough immediately despite its significant growth.

This rise in the trend of artificial intelligence and computing has also led to a significant increase in electricity consumption in the United States and will lead to a place that determines the trend in this regard as artificial intelligence data centers consume huge amounts of energy.

Artificial intelligence data center needs

In this regard, a study conducted by the Electric Power Research Institute last May of 2024 indicated that data centers may use up to 9% of the total electricity generated in the United States by the end of the decade, that is, in 2030, depending on the rates of adoption of artificial intelligence and technology.
Amazon has multiple agreements with US utility companies to power its data centers across the country, including partnerships with Tallinn Energy in Pennsylvania and Entergy in Mississippi.
