The launch of the Water Forum within Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025

ABU DHABI, 14 JANUARY / WAM / The Water Forum, which is being held at the ADNEC Center in Abu Dhabi as part of the activities of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025, kicked off today, in the presence of those concerned with the water sector and a group of distinguished experts from the region and the world.
In his opening speech, His Excellency Engineer Ahmed Al Kaabi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Electricity, Water and Future Energy Sector at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, welcomed the participants in the forum that brings together world leaders to confront the challenges facing governments and societies in dry countries, especially in issues of water and food security, stressing that organizing a week This year’s Abu Dhabi Sustainability Foundation, under the slogan “Integration of sectors for a sustainable future,” highlights the importance of accelerating sustainable development and promoting social and economic progress.
He said that managing the interconnection between resources effectively is the key to ensuring long-term sustainability and meeting the world’s needs for water, energy, and food in light of the increasing demand and climate challenges, and that we in the UAE are working to address the challenges of water, energy, and food through integrated resource planning, adopting a circular economy approach, and investing. Innovative solutions to ensure equitable access to water, energy and food for current and future generations.
He added that due to the sharp increase in global water needs to keep pace with population, agricultural and industrial growth, the issue of water resource sustainability has become more urgent on the international agenda, and in the UAE, water is one of the most important national priority issues due to the scarcity of natural resources and the high demand for water for development purposes, so the focus is The country’s current water sector policies seek to develop sustainable sources of water supply, by expanding membrane-based desalination technologies, increasing the use of renewable energy sources in the water sector, investing in technologies that enhance water use efficiency, and maximizing wastewater reuse. Sanitary treatment.
Al Kaabi stated that the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 and its associated programs focus on the readiness and sustainability of the water supply chain from production to distribution, demand management, and the social and economic aspects of the water sector. According to the latest annual statistics, the total production capacity of seawater desalination plants in the Emirates reaches 1,855 million gallons. Daily, as for wastewater treatment, the country has treated 823 million cubic meters, with more than 70% of it being reused, while the percentage of access to clean drinking water and sanitation is Suitable in the UAE 100%.”
He stressed that the UAE achieved outstanding results, reaching 83% in the Integrated Water Resources Management Index, and seeks to improve this performance in the coming years by ensuring compatibility and integration between water, energy, environment and food strategies. He stressed that the UAE is currently preparing to host the United Nations Water Conference 2026 in cooperation with Senegal, which aims to accelerate the achievement of Goal 6 of the Sustainable Development Goals and enhance efforts to ensure sustainable management of water resources.
