The UAE participates in the international meeting of geological survey bodies in Riyadh

RIYADH, 19th January, 2018 (WAM) – The UAE participated in the work of the international meeting of geological survey bodies, which was held within the activities of the Fourth International Mining Conference in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

The meeting aims to enhance international cooperation in the mining sector and develop geological capabilities, which contributes to increasing the production of minerals necessary to support the energy transition and industrial development.

The UAE delegation was headed by His Excellency Engineer Ali Qasim, Director General of the Fujairah Natural Resources Corporation, and the delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.

Heads of geological surveys from Africa and Asia also participated in the meeting, in addition to prominent international bodies such as the American and British Geological Surveys, the French Geological Office and the Finnish Geological Survey.

The meeting discussed several main topics, most notably enhancing capabilities to increase geological survey operations, enabling further exploration, and contributing to scientific progress, to address challenges related to the capabilities of geological survey bodies.

The meeting also witnessed the launch of an international initiative to form three pivotal coordination groups concerned with developing talent, making data available, and establishing a geological center of excellence.

His Excellency Engineer Ali Qasim stressed the importance of this meeting in laying the foundations for the sustainable development of the metals industry in the world and the region, which contributes to strengthening advanced industries and supporting the process of carbon neutrality at the global level, in addition to building capabilities and making the metals industry a major driver for achieving economic and social development.

He pointed out that the participation of the UAE delegation aims to enhance cooperation and relations between the participating countries, pointing out the necessity of following up on the implementation of the recommendations that were discussed in order to reach the best results in the fields of geological activity and mining.
