المملكة: World Health Organization regrets Trump’s decision to withdraw and evaluates its impact
On his first day in office yesterday, Monday, Trump fulfilled his pre-election pledge to do everything in his power to end US membership in the Geneva-based United Nations.
However, Trump’s order will not be implemented immediately, as his administration must notify the UN Secretary-General in writing of the withdrawal decision.
It will then take a year to take effect. The organization said in a statement: “The World Health Organization regrets that the United States announced its intention to withdraw from the organization.”
Critical role
The statement added: “The World Health Organization plays a critical role in protecting the health and security of the world’s people, including Americans, to address the root causes of diseases, build stronger health systems, and detect, prevent, and deal with health emergencies, including disease outbreaks, which often occur in… Dangerous places where others cannot go.
It is noteworthy that the United States is by far the largest contributor to the World Health Organization, and its share in the organization’s 2023 budget reached 18%.
Coronavirus
The UN agency said it would analyze what the United States’ exit from its programs would mean, adding that it was still too early to provide any details.
Trump’s anger at the World Health Organization is due to the emerging coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
Trump tried to complete the United States’ withdrawal from the organization during his first term.
But former US President Joe Biden became president before the one-year deadline expired, and overturned Trump’s decision. Trump accuses the World Health Organization of misusing funds and mishandling the pandemic.
