The first urgent American action from Trump to annex Greenland to the United States

On Friday evening, US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, during which he insistently demanded that Greenland be transferred to the jurisdiction of the United States.
According to the Financial Times, the phone conversation lasted 45 minutes and was tense.
Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with Frederiksen’s refusal to discuss the possibility of selling Al Jazeera, despite its proposal to expand cooperation in the areas of military bases and mineral development.
Sources familiar with the details of the conversation said that Trump acted aggressively and threatened to impose targeted tariffs on Denmark if it refused.
In response to these reports, the Danish Prime Minister’s office said that it “does not accept the interpretation of the conversation provided by anonymous sources.”
Greenland, the largest island in the world, is an autonomous region of Denmark with a population of Its population is about 57 thousand people.
In December 2024, Trump announced his desire to acquire the island, citing American national security interests.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Greenland announced , Mot Egede, in his New Year’s speech, expressed his desire for independence from Denmark, stressing that according to the 2009 treaty, the island could only declare independence after Referendum.
In early January, Trump threatened to impose customs duties on Denmark if it prevented Greenland from submitting to US jurisdiction, and did not rule out the use of military force to control the island.
Earlier, In August 2019, Trump had already expressed the idea of buying Greenland, which sparked negative reactions from Denmark.
Then Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the proposal ridiculous, and Trump canceled a scheduled visit to Copenhagen.
Greenland is of strategic importance due to its geographical location and rich natural resources, including oil, gas and rare earth minerals.
