UNRWA calls on Israel to respect and protect UNRWA property and facilities

  The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees has confirmed that the State of Israel must take all appropriate measures that are consistent with the obligations of international law to ensure respect and protection of UNRWA property and facilities.

The agency indicated The United Nations – in a statement today, the State of Israel ordered UNRWA to evacuate all its buildings in occupied East Jerusalem and cease its operations there by January 30, 2025.

UNRWA warned that this matter contradicts the international law obligations of member states of the United Nations, including the State of Israel, which is committed to the General Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations.

UNRWA stressed that The premises of the United Nations are inviolable and enjoy privileges and immunities under the Charter of the United Nations. The State of Israel has signed – without reservations – the General Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations and has enacted its provisions in its domestic law. These provisions obligate the State of Israel to respect the privileges and immunities of the United Nations, including respect for United Nations buildings.

The agency indicated that UNRWA property and assets, including in East Jerusalem, enjoy immunity from search, seizure, confiscation, expropriation and any Another form of interference.

UNRWA explained that the claims of the Israeli authorities that UNRWA does not have the right to occupy the buildings are unfounded. It also promotes anti-UNRWA rhetoric, putting the agency’s facilities and staff at risk. The Israeli government has publicly stated that the aim of evacuating UNRWA buildings in Sheikh Jarrah is to expand illegal Israeli settlements in occupied East Jerusalem.
