UAE .. 35 years of fighting "Neglected diseases" Around the world

Abu Dhabi, January 29/ WAM/ For 35 years, the UAE has led global efforts to combat neglected tropical diseases, specifically since 1990 in which the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, “may God rest his soul,” initiated, to donate $ 5.77 million to the Carter Center In support of the efforts to eradicate the “Guinea” worm.
The UAE will participate tomorrow by reviving the “World Tribal Diseases Day”, which was adopted thanks to the diplomatic efforts of the country in cooperation with its partners, which was announced at the last inclination forum in 2019 in Abu Dhabi, and the World Health Organization officially recognized it in 2021.
It is due to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, may God protect him, thanks to launching the most important initiative to combat neglected tropical diseases around the world.
The “COP28” Conference, which was hosted by the UAE in December 2023, witnessed the announcement of the increase in the size of the last inclination fund from 100 million dollars to 500 million dollars, with the aim of raising the fund’s ability to reach the affected areas, from seven countries to 39 countries throughout Africa, in addition to Yemen.
The International Day of Circular Diseases aims to involve the international community in efforts to combat these diseases, enhance public awareness, and emphasize the possibility of their eradication, the urgent need for partnerships and sustainable investment to combat them, especially preventive diseases.
Simon Bland, CEO of the World Institute for the Elimination of Infectious Diseases “Galled”, said that neglected tropical diseases affect more than a billion people around the world, which shows the urgent need to coordinate global efforts to put an end to these diseases and accelerate their elimination, stressing the commitment of “Glaid” Building partnerships, enhancing capabilities, and expanding the base of knowledge to push those efforts.
For her part, Dr. Farida Al -Hosani, Executive Vice President of “Galid” said that the institute, which is based in Abu Dhabi, is proud to build on the legacy of the UAE in the leadership of global health initiatives to contribute to improving the life and welfare of billions of people around the world, including efforts to eliminate Neglected tropical diseases.
She added that the elimination of neglected tropical diseases is an ethical duty that is based on the team’s collective workplace and societies, which is in line with the UAE’s announcement of allocating in 2025 to be the “year of society”. From this standpoint, Galid renews his commitment to standing alongside its partners around the world in a march Eliminate these diseases and achieve a healthier future for all.
The World Health Organization had developed a plan aimed at reducing the number of people who needed treatment against neglected tropical diseases by 90% by 2030, achieving 75% reduction in the amended years of life according to disability and related to neglected tropical areas, and achieving the goal of spending 100 A country on one neglected tropical disease, eliminating two neglected tropical diseases in general.
It is worth noting that “neglected tropical diseases” is the name of a group of 21 patients that affect more than 1.6 billion people worldwide, and these diseases cause health challenges, disabilities, distortions and cause their victims at times and is a threat to their future on the physical, economic, and social levels .
