The Director General of the Organization for the Chemical Weapons Prohibition visits Syria and discusses the following steps to close the chemical weapons file

The organization said in a statement issued today, Saturday, that the meetings were lengthy, fruitful and very open, during which an in -depth exchange of information took place, which will be based on it to reach tangible results and break the stalemate, which lasted for more than 11 years.

She added that this visit was a first step towards rebuilding a direct working relationship between the technical secretariat of the organization and Syria, after 11 years of recession and the lack of progress with the previous authorities.

According to the statement, the two sides discussed in their meeting the obligations of Syria under the Chemical Weapons Agreement, the role and mandate of the organization, and the type of support that the technical secretariat can provide to the Syrian business conduct authorities to remove the remnants of the Syrian chemical weapons program.

The general manager of the organization said that “This visit represents a reset of matters. After 11 years of obstruction, which was practiced by the previous authorities, in front of the Syrian business authorities, an opportunity to fold the page and fulfill Syrian obligations under the agreement.”.

He added: “My presence in Damascus is an embodiment of the organization’s commitment to rebuild a relationship based on mutual trust and transparency. The Syrian chemical weapons file has been for more than a decade on a dead end. Today, we must take this opportunity together and get out of this dead end for the good of the Syrian people and society International “.

Open issues processing

Since 2013, Syria’s announcement of its chemical weapons program has remained incomplete, as it has not been revealed about the fate of large quantities of chemical weapons, and the previous Syrian authorities have not been shown in cooperation. This led to the suspension of some of Syria’s rights in the organization’s guidance agencies since April 2021.

Arias stressed that the organization is looking to work with the transitional Syrian government in order to address these open issues and fulfill its responsibilities to restore its rights in the organization. For this purpose, the Director General of Syria in the transitional phase Ahmed Al -Shara and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Cathoine Government presented the Amana Action Plan of nine points on Syria.

The Director General also stressed that the organization is ready to support Syria in fulfilling its obligations under the agreement. Thus, business draining authorities will protect the Syrian people, and will help hold accountable all those who have been proven to have used chemical weapons, and will enhance the country’s reputation as a member of the international community that can be reliable and reliable.
