Google pays 326 million euros to settle a dispute with the Italian tax authorities

Rome, February 20 / WAM / The Public Prosecution in the Italian city of Milan announced on Wednesday that Google paid 326 million euros to settle a dispute with the Italian tax authorities, and recommended the initial investigating judge to close the case.
The Italian judiciary suspected that the Google Group did not pay the taxes due during the period from 2015 to 2019.

After an agreement, the company began to pay 326 million euros as taxes, fines and benefits; To end its dispute with the tax authorities, according to a statement issued by the Public Prosecution.
According to the prosecution, “Google Irish Limited”, a company registered under the Irish law, failed to submit the annual declaration of income acquired in Italy during this period, which comes, especially from “selling advertising spaces”, according to the statement.
The agreement reached by the Public Prosecution and Google allows the latter to comply and avoid more investigations, although the last word is the responsibility of the initial investigating judge.
The Italian Competition Control Authority opened an investigation last July against Google and its mother company “Alphabet” regarding sending a request to users to agree to the association with its services, which it said could constitute a “deceptive and aggressive commercial practice.”
The authority had already imposed a fine of 20 million euros on Google and Apple in November 2021, equally divided between the two companies, due to “aggressive” practices in using consumer data for commercial purposes.
