International Women’s Day: Does the world fulfill the promises of Beijing after 30 years?

Come This year’s celebration Under the slogan “Rights, equality and empowerment for all women and girls.” The topic of this year calls for measures that can unleash equal rights, power, opportunities for all, and a feminist future in which a woman is not left behind the knees.

The celebration of this year coincides with the celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of the advertisement and curriculum of Beijing, who developed a road map to empower women, and stressed that “women’s rights are human rights.” Despite the great progress in women’s rights since the approval of the curriculum in 1995, the world is witnessing new, intertwined and eroded crises.

Promise, but fragile gains

United Nations Secretary -General Antonio Guterres started his speech in the celebration of a quote from the first words mentioned in the Beijing Declaration, saying that we are meeting today not only to celebrate the International Day of Women, but to go ahead – steadfast, united, and two in our endeavor to achieve “Equality, development and peace for all women everywhere in the interest of humanity.”

Since the advertisement, the Secretary -General said that “Women broke barriers, break the glass ceilings, and enemy the formation of societies. More girls entered schools. More women held power positions. Digital activity ignited global movements for justice.”

However, Guterres warned that these gains that were made hard for the same remain fragile and far from being sufficient, indicating that our societies are still afflicted with old horrors – violence, discrimination, economic inequality. He added:

“Every ten minutes, A woman is killed by her partner or a member of her family. 612 million women live in armed conflicts. Less than two -thirds of women around the world participate in the labor market – and those who do this earn much less wages than men. “

At this rate, the Secretary -General warns that eliminating extreme poverty for women and girls will take 130 years.

Women’s rights are attacked

The Secretary -General also pointed to the attacks on the rights of women that we are currently witnessing all over the world, noting that these new threats exacerbate centuries of discrimination.

He said: “Digital tools often work to silence women’s voices, amplifying prejudice, and fueling harassment. Women’s bodies have become squares of political battles. Violence is escalating online into violence in real life.”

Instead of generalizing equal rights, we are witnessing a generalization of intolerance and hatred of women, but the Secretary -General says that we cannot stand idly by while the course of progress is replaced, but rather “We must resist”.
