UN experts warn against the aggravation of the food crisis in Myanmar

Geneva, March 13 / WAM / Human rights experts at the United Nations, in a statement issued today, Thursday, in Geneva, expressed their deep concern about the unprecedented food security crisis that is exacerbated and leads to a sharp deterioration in human rights conditions throughout Myanmar.

Experts, including Michael Fakhry, the Special Rapporteur on Food, and Thomas Andrews, the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Myanmar, indicated that more than 19.9 million people currently need urgent humanitarian assistance; They explained that the conflict, which has escalated throughout the country since February 2021, has led to a confrontation of an estimated 15.2 million people, or nearly a third of the Myanmar population, because of the acute food insecurity by 2025.

The statement expected that the cost of the basic foodstuffs in 2025 will increase by 30% compared to the previous year, warning that the last American presidential executive order to suspend external aid will have severe consequences for the situation in Myanmar and the neighboring countries hosting refugees.

The statement described the situation in the state of Rakhine as embarrassing, where the United Nations Development Program stated that the state is on the brink of starvation, and one person faces the risk of death.

Experts said that the high food rates and the decline in families ’decline led to a sharp decline in food quality, which left more than 40% of children between the ages of 6 and 23 months deprived of obtaining various and nutritious meals necessary to survive and grow.

The statement stated that repeated internet interruptions in large parts of Myanmar hinder data collection, and prevents accurate reports of the effects of food insecurity, deprivation and malnutrition.
