Food security gains in Gaza are at risk … and increasing concerns about the West Bank

The World Food Program explained that the prices of commercial foodstuffs have been increasing since the closure of the crossings. In some cases, the prices of basic materials such as flour, sugar and vegetables increased by more than 200 percent. Merchants began blocking goods due to uncertainty about the date of the arrival of the new supplies.
Foods are awaiting delivery
The UN program stated that he currently has sufficient food stocks to support kitchens and bakeries operating for up to a month, in addition to ready -made food parcels to support 550 thousand people for two weeks.
The program also has approximately 63 thousand metric tons of foodstuffs heading to Gaza, stored or on its way in the region. This is equivalent to distributions for two to three months for 1.1 million people, pending permission to enter Gaza.
The World Food Program explained that he had delivered more than 40,000 metric tons of food to Gaza and provided life -saving aid to 1.3 million people, during the 42 -day ceasefire period starting from January 19.
In addition, he provided more than $ 6.8 million in cash aid to support nearly 135 thousand people, which helped families buy the supplies that affect their need.
Just as he did before the ceasefire, the World Food Program reduces the amount of food parcels ready to eat for families to extend its supplies and serve more needy.
The UN program said that it currently supports 33 kitchen across Gaza, which offers a total of 180,000 hot meals per day. It also supports 25 bakery, but on March 8, six of these bakeries were forced to close due to a lack of cooking gas.
Military activities limit access to food
As for the situation in the West Bank, the World Food Program has expressed increased concern about the increasing food insecurity there, as military activities, displacement and movement restrictions are disrupted, markets and limited food access.
It is noteworthy that tens of thousands of people in the West Bank have had to displace their homes since mid -January.
These turmoil and the deterioration of economic conditions during the past year increase pressure on prices. Even basic foodstuffs have become uncomfortable for many families with high displacement and unemployment.
The World Food Program said it supports more than 190,000 people with monthly cash vouchers and provided one time assistance to about 16,000 people in need.
The World Food Program stated that he needed 265 million dollars to finance its operations during the next six months to help 1.4 million people in Gaza and the West Bank.
