The Turkish currency fell in front of its American counterpart, in Wednesday’s trading, as it exceeded the barrier of 40 pounds for the dollar, for the first time ever.

By 10:40 Moscow time, the price of the dollar increased by 9.9% to 40.3541 pounds, thus the dollar has exceeded the barrier of 40 pounds for the first time ever.

While trading was suspended on the Istanbul Stock Exchange after its main index decreased by 6.87%.

This comes after the Turkish authorities announced the arrest of the mayor of the Greater Istanbul municipality, Akram Imamoglu, on charges related to the leadership of a gang involved in corruption and bribes.

The authorities in Istanbul imposed a ban on demonstrations and gatherings until March 23, according to Turkish media, quoting official sources.

Users in Türkiye also face problems in accessing the Internet, in addition to the presence of restrictions on the work of several social platforms, including YouTube and “Tik Talk”.

The media reported that the authorities closed the main streets in Istanbul, and one of the metro stations was closed.
