At least 22 people were killed by floods in the Democratic Congo

The huge floods in the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kinshasa, killed at least 22 people, and cut off more than half of the city and the main airport in the country, according to the authorities reported on Sunday.
Patrician Nagongo, the Minister of Regional Health, said that most of the deaths that occurred during the heavy rains resulted from the collapse of the walls.

The main road

The main road leading to the airport was damaged, but it was reopened in front of light traffic, and it is expected that it will be completely reopened to all kinds of traffic within 72 hours, according to the governor of Kinshasa, Daniel Bomba.
This road also connects Kinshasa to the rest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, raising officials’ concerns about the impact of this on the trade movement.
“We have been here since sunset, but we are not making any progress, because we have informed that the road is cut into two parts, and we are waiting for our goods to receive,” said Blaise Ndendo, a truck driver.

Floods 2022

Similar floods had killed at least 100 people in Kinshasa in 2022.
In the aftermath of the floods, many prominent members of civil society in Kinshasa, the mayor of the city, called for resignation, while the government claimed that the houses that were flooded with water and collapsed “were not built with urban planning standards.”
In addition to the 22 deaths, 46 people have been transferred to hospitals and 75 families will be accommodated in a temporary close stadium.
