The United Nations warns of humanitarian repercussions in Darfur amid the escalation of violence and the displacement of thousands of civilians

UN spokesman, Stephen Dujarric, said that more than 4,000 people were newly displaced in North Darfur state last week due to the escalation of violence in El Fasher, including the Zamzam camp for the displaced, where the state of starvation was confirmed.

During his daily press conference, Dujarik said: “The displaced families, including many women and children, are in urgent need of shelter. They need food, water and medical supplies, but sharp financing gaps and logistical challenges hinder the ability of relief organizations to respond. He told one of the partners in Zamzam camp.

Since April 2023, more than 400,000 men, women and children have been displaced inside or outside the Fasher locality, when these last rounds of hostilities began.

Dujarik stressed that the ongoing conflict is still exposing civilians throughout Sudan. He said that the intensification of the fighting in the state of Khartoum disrupted a period of calm witnessed by the western neighborhoods of Omdurman, adding that there are also reports that new civilians are displaced, and they need protection and human assistance urgently.

He pointed out that an attack by drones in northern Sudan earlier this week led to the suspension of operations in the Meroe Dam, “Which caused the power outages widely in several states.”

He said that the strikes, as stated, caused civilian casualties and damaged the vital infrastructure, “Which confirms the increasing impact of this struggle on basic services.”

The United Nations spokesman repeated his call for an immediate endowment of hostilities and the arrival of humanitarian aid without obstacle across Sudan. He also urged donors to increase funding “To maintain the continued life -saving services and help agencies reach those in need in areas affected by violence and acute hunger.”
