Trump exempts smartphones, computers and chips from mutual customs duties

The administration of US President Donald Trump has exempted smartphones, chips, computers and other electronic devices, from “mutual customs duties”, which could reduce the shock of prices on consumers, and reduce its impact on technology giants such as Apple and Samsung, according to “Bloomberg”.

CBP Customs and Protection Authority has published these exemptions late Friday, which reduces customs duties by excluding these products from 145% customs tariffs imposed on China, and from the basic tariff of 10% of other countries of the world.

These exceptions apply to smartphones, laptops, hard storage tablets, computers, and memory slices.

Bloomberg said that these electronic devices are not usually manufactured in the United States, and it takes years of local production lines.

Products that will not be subject to new customs duties also include machines used to manufacture semiconductors, which is important for Taiwan Taic, which has announced new large investments in the United States, as well as other chips.

However, Bloomberg indicated that this exemption from fees may be temporary, as exceptions stemming from the initial order that prevented the imposition of vehicle fees on some sectors above the fees applied at the state level.

She pointed out that this exception may be an indication that these products will soon be subject to a different type of customs duties, but more likely, especially for China.

Among these exceptions is the semi -conductors that Trump has repeatedly pledged to impose specific customs duties, and this has not yet been implemented, but the recent exceptions seem compatible with this trend.
