المملكة: Arab ministers adopt the Kingdom’s initiative to develop the Meteorological and Climate Committee

The Arab Cabinet concerned with meteorological and climate affairs approved the Kingdom’s initiative to develop the permanent Arab Meteorological and Climate Committee, during its fourth ministerial meeting today, Thursday, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo, with the participation of ministers and officials from Arab countries.
The meeting discussed the most important climate challenges facing the region and ways to develop mechanisms of cooperation between member states.

Promote the Arab Meteorological System

The head of the Kingdom’s delegation, the CEO of the National Meteorological Center d. Ayman bin Salem Ghulam, in the Kingdom’s speech, is the importance of strengthening the Arab meteorological and climate system to face rapid climate changes and extremist air phenomena, which have become a direct threat to environmental, food and water security in a number of countries.

He explained that the Kingdom restructured the meteorological sector through the establishment of the National Meteorological Center as an advanced institution that relies on the latest technologies, and expanded the range of automatic and qualified monitoring to include more than 70% of the Kingdom’s area, and raised the number of Doppler radars to 17 radars, achieving the highest coverage in the Arab region.
In addition to launching the new meteorological system, which enhances governance and opens the way for the private sector’s participation in supporting and developing the sector.

Quality regional initiatives

Ghulam indicated that the Kingdom launched a number of qualitative regional initiatives through the National Meteorological Center, which was announced during the Green Middle East Summit, most notably: the regional center for climate change, the regional center for dust and sandy storms, and the rating program.

He stressed that the Kingdom is the first Arab country to launch an automated early warning system from air phenomena since 2010.

Infrastructure update

The CEO of the National Meteorological Center reviewed the Kingdom’s initiative to develop the Arab Standing Committee for Meteorology and Climate approved by the Council during the meeting, and includes the update of infrastructure, the adoption of digital transformation, the development of human competencies, and the promotion of international partnerships, in support of the joint Arab work in this vital field.
The Kingdom reaffirmed its full commitment to continuing to support regional and international efforts in the fields of meteorology and climate, based on the targets of the Kingdom’s 2030 vision, and in a way that contributes to protecting lives and property, and achieving environmental security and sustainability in the region.
The Council had approved a number of decisions, the most prominent of which are: the Kingdom’s initiative to develop the permanent Arab Meteorological and Climate Committee, and to adopt the logo of the Arab Council of Ministers implemented by the Kingdom, represented by the Media Center for Production and Digital Communication at the National Meteorological Center.
In addition to a number of other decisions related to the committee’s work and business schedule.
