The start of the fifth conference of translation in the archive and the national library
Abu Dhabi, April 22 / WAM / The activities of the Fifth International Conference on Translation were launched under the slogan “New contexts in the era of artificial intelligence: technical challenges and future aspirations” organized by the archive and the national library with the participation of a group of experts, specialists and academics from all over the world to discuss the deep translations witnessed in the translation sector in light of the accelerated technological development.
The opening session started with the presentation of a documentary film that highlighted the importance of artificial intelligence and its growing applications, reviewing the UAE’s efforts to invest in this advanced technology in confirmation of its role in promoting the knowledge system.
His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Majid Al Ali, Director General of the Archives and the National Library, stressed in his opening speech that the conference embodies the UAE commitment to support knowledge and preserve the cultural identity, stressing that the tools of artificial intelligence despite its development cannot replace the translator in the transfer of the tone, spirit and cultural context of the texts.
He said, “We live today a fundamental shift in the world of translation, as the tools of automated translation and smart linguistic models impose a new reality that calls for a review of roles, concepts and curricula while preserving cultural and linguistic specificities.”
“Will the translator remain a partner in this digital age, or will artificial intelligence go forward to take the full role?”
For his part, Dr. Hamad Al -Humairi, Director of Research and Knowledge Services Department at the Archive and the National Library, explained with a statement to the Emirates News Agency “WAM” that the conference is an important platform for the development of translation in the region and attracts scientific posts from 31 researchers distributed on seven scientific sessions within two days with the participation of representatives from 10 countries and from universities and prestigious local and international institutions, including Mohammed bin Zayed University for Humanities, University Oxford, the General Command of Abu Dhabi Police and Abu Dhabi Petroleum Company.
He added that artificial intelligence has become a vital tool in translation and requires workers in this field serious interaction with this new reality, as translation issues are no longer technical, but existentialism that affects the essence of the language and the profession and its future.
Aisha Al Dhaheri, head of the translation and publishing department, confirmed in a documentary presentation on the development witnessed by the conference since its inception, noting the growing number of participants and its axes, which reflects the increase in interest in the topic of smart translation.
Dr. Radwan El -Sayed, Dean of the College of Graduate Studies at Mohammed bin Zayed University for Humanities, said that the difference between the traditional translator and the “civilized carrier”, stressing that whoever transmits a civilization and knowledge remains a pivotal role, no matter how the translation tools and techniques develop.
The first session was moderated by “Translation Questions in the Time of Artificial Intelligence”, Dr. Fawzi Al -Ghazali, in which a number of prominent researchers, including Professor Siddiq Johar, who discussed the changing relationship between translation and artificial intelligence, and Dr. Anisa Dawoudi, who raised questions about the ability of artificial intelligence to translate texts that carry deep cultural meanings and Dr. Miguel Berno Mirino who dealt with the use of artificial intelligence techniques in education Dr. Igor Mavier, who reviewed the role of artificial intelligence in creative writing and Dr. Hanan Al -Jabri, who provided an analytical comparison between the human translator and artificial intelligence in dealing with accurate cultural differences.
At the end of the opening session, His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Majid Al Ali honored the strategic partners of the conference in appreciation of their active role in the success of this leading international platform.
The activities of the conference continue on April 22 and 23, where it discusses the most prominent challenges and future opportunities in the areas of translation and works to formulate new visions that keep pace with digital transformation and contribute to supporting human knowledge through language.
