Sharjah, August 5/ WAM/ Under the patronage of the wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Muhammad Al Qasimi, Head of a Hurry Council for Contemporary Crafts.

Since its establishment in 2015, the Council recorded qualitative achievements in terms of enabling craftsmanship, by building an integrated system of training and production, the network of craftsmen, including 840 craftsmen until last May, and its programs extended to 13 countries around the world.

His Excellency Reem bin Karam, Director General of a heritage Council, stressed that Sharjah, thanks to the vision of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Muhammad Al Qasimi, transformed handicrafts from living tools into cultural symbols of an artistic and economic nature, reflecting the national identity and contributing to enabling society members, especially women.

She explained that during the past decade, the council succeeded in providing the craft as a means of cultural dialogue, through strategic partnerships with prestigious international institutions such as “Bulgari”, “Cartier” and “Design Miami”, and also participated in international activities such as “Mizon de Expressions – Paris”, “London Design Week”, “Dubai Design Week”, and others.

Ibn Karam indicated that a “legacy” council contributed to the nomination and selection of the Emirate of Sharjah, a creative city in the field of crafts and folklore by UNESCO in 2019, thanks to its embrace of one of the most ancient Emirati crafts, which is “Al -Tali”, stressing that the Emirati letter is now part of the global cultural scene.

The Council continues its celebrations of the tenth anniversary of more than 7 international and local events held in Sharjah, London, Basel and Moscow, as well as signing more than 5 new strategic partnerships, and launching new production groups that mix heritage aesthetics and contemporary innovation.

During the year 2024, the Council implemented more than 60 workshops, in which about 1,400 beneficiaries participated, in addition to qualitative publications documenting traditional crafts such as “palm fibers”, “natural dyes industry” and “recipes for the future”, as part of continuous efforts to transfer craftsmanship to new generations in modern methods.

A heritage council confirms through its extended career that the Emirati craft heritage constitutes an important cultural and economic pillar, and that supporting craftsmen is an investment in sustainable development, and an embodiment of the vision of Sharjah in building a creative society that celebrates its identity and shares its culture with the world.
