Sudan – A worsening humanitarian catastrophe and the United Nations renews the call to stop the fighting

UN spokesman Stefan Dujarric renewed the call to all parties to stop hostilities, immediately, and fulfill their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians and civil infrastructure and ensure human access – safely, sustainable and without obstacles – to the needy people.

He also urged the international community to intensify support for the humanitarian response in Sudan to prevent further loss of life and avoid the aggravation of the disaster.

Discount for the second time

The International Organization for Migration stated that more than 36,000 people were displaced from Al -Khwaywi and Joys in West Kordofan due to the escalation of insecurity, and many of them had already been displaced, and they are now forced to flee for the second time, in search of shelter in other locations in western and northern Kordofan.

In North Darfur, the International Organization for Migration also states that more than two thousand people were newly displaced from Abu Shok camp and parts of Al -Fasher due to the ongoing security situation, and most of them are still inside Al -Fasher while others fled to a long area.

Stefan Dujarric said at the daily press conference that the United Nations and its partners sought support for the new expatriates, noting that these moves came after the displacement of nearly 400,000 people from Zamzam camp last month.

A significant increase in food prices

Humanitarian workers have warned that food insecurity is still deeply concerned, As the prices of basic foodstuffs rose in a threat, the prices of high corn and millet – who are the main food for most of the population in the central and eastern parts of Sudan – increased by four times compared to the current pre -conflict period.

The UN spokesman reminded that more than half of the population of Sudan – i.e. 24.6 million people – suffer from acute hunger, and is nearly 638,000 people from actual starvation, according to the integrated classification report of the food security stages issued late last year and covers the period until May.

The United Nations Office on the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha) said that without urgent assistance and unrestricted arrival to the needy, wherever they are, the situation will get worse during the next lewd season that runs from June to September.
