Putin isolates the commander of the Russian army ground forces
The decree stated that Saliokov was appointed as a deputy to the Secretary of the Russian National Security Council, an important consulting body that regularly meets with Putin and “has been exempted from his current duties.”
Saliokov, 70, is thus becoming a deputy former Russian Defense Secretary Sergey Shoigu, who was sacked last year and was appointed as a secretary of the Russian National Security Council.
Corruption accusations
Less than a week ago, Saliokov managed the great military parade on the occasion of the victory day in the Red Square with the current Defense Secretary Andre Pelosov, to celebrate the eighties of the victory over Nazi Germany.
Russian law enforcement has accused more than twelve military and defensive officials since last year, many of whom were accused of embezzling money from major projects to achieve personal gains.
The rank of Shoigo, the old ally of Putin, was reduced last year after he held various high positions since the early 1990s.
The Kremlin denied that the arrests and dismissals that affected the senior Russian military commanders were a cleansing of the military establishment after setbacks in Ukraine.
Saliokov has been responsible for the Russian ground forces since 2014 and supervised its operations during the war in Syria and in the conquest of Ukraine.
Before that, Saliokov held the position of Vice -Chairman of the General Staff for a period of four years.
