Russia and Ukraine will start the ceasefire talks

In a sudden development of the crisis that has been going on for more than 3 years, US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations to reach a ceasefire, after a phone call he described as “excellent” with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Russia and Ukraine will start negotiations immediately with the aim of stopping the shooting, and most importantly ending the war, so the path will be launched.”
Trump did not specify a specific date or place for negotiations, but he indicated that her contract in the Vatican would be great.

Putin’s position and Zellinski

In turn, Putin described the call as “very useful”, and pointed to Moscow’s readiness to work on a memorandum of understanding on a possible peace agreement, stressing the need to find acceptable settlements on both parties to the conflict.
As for Ukrainian President Folodimir Zellinski, he expressed his lack of clear details of the Russian initiative, and confirmed that he was “ready to study the presentation.”
Zelinski said in a later statement, that he had spoken to Trump for 10 to 15 minutes, and asked him not to make any decision concerning Ukraine without its approval, reiterating that his country would not give up its lands, which Russia prepared as a pre -condition.

Putin praises negotiations

Putin said the talks between Russia and Ukraine are “in the right direction”, and that the two parties must “make maximum efforts to reach settlements that satisfy everyone.”
The two sides had held the first round of direct talks in Istanbul since 2022, but did not lead to a ceasefire.

Trump wants to move the stalemate

White House spokeswoman Caroline Levit said that the US President was “tired of the intransigence of Moscow and Kiev” and wanted to move the political stalemate.
But Zelinski warned that Washington’s departure from the path of negotiations would be in the interest of Putin, calling on the United States to continue to pressure Russia.
