Sharjah libraries celebrate the old manuscripts

Sharjah, May 30 / WAM / Sharjah Public Libraries organized a cultural event, to celebrate the hundred years since its founding, entitled “Reviving forgotten pages” at the Sharjah Museum of Antiquities, in cooperation with the Sharjah Museums Authority and the Juma Al Majid Center for Culture and Heritage, during which it reviewed aspects of the history of the book and the manuscript, its maintenance methods and cognitive value in the march of civilization.

The event program was distributed to three main stations that included a scientific lecture on “Restoration and Conservation of Historical Manuscripts”, and interactive workshops entitled “Book Clinic” presented live offers on cleaning books and binding them alongside a workshop for children to simulate the old writing in the southern Musnad line, one of the oldest lines in the Arabian Peninsula.

She witnessed the presence of those interested in culture and writers, including academics, students, employees, and a public public.

The “Reviving Forgiving Pages” event was started with a session of Dr. Bassam Daghistani, Head of the Department of Conservation, Processing and Restoration at the Juma Al Majid Center for Culture and Heritage, during which he dealt with the importance of manuscripts as a common human heritage among the peoples of the world, indicating that the UAE has become a beacon in the field of maintenance and preservation of manuscripts, and highlights the environmental challenges facing this heritage as a result of its exposure to heat and humidity And light, reviewing the exact stages of restoration of examination and sterilization using hydrogen gas to dry cleaning. Chemical treatment to reduce the acidity of the paper to the manual restoration that depends on the accurate matching of the materials.

He pointed out that automated restoration is the latest qualitative shift in maintenance techniques, and concluded in detailing the “trilogy” after the restoration: photography, binding and storage in a disciplined environment with strict scientific standards.

As part of its interactive corner, “Books Clinic”, two specialized workshops in cooperation with the Jumaa Al -Majid Center presented practical experiences in front of the audience for methods of restoration and binding of old books.

The first workshop presented the steps for treating paper use using manual restoration tools, and the second workshop is a practical practical experiment to manually binding books using traditional materials with an explanation of the steps to wrap the book and settle its edges in a way that preserves its structure and shape.

The event concluded with an interactive workshop for children, in which they had the experience of simulating old inscriptions using clay panels, inspired by prehistoric writings embraced by the Sharjah Museum of Antiquities.
