Sharjah University organizes the seventeenth annual scientific research forum

Sharjah, June 4 / WAM / Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, President of Sharjah University, the University organized the seventeenth annual forum for scientific research, in confirmation of its strategy in supporting applied scientific research aimed at community service and achieving sustainable development, under the slogan: “Transformational Scientific Research: Forming the Future of Societies”.
The forum was inaugurated by His Excellency Prof. Issam El -Din Ajami, Director of Sharjah University, in the presence of a number of officials, researchers and faculty members, as it highlighted the most prominent research achievements achieved by the university during the current academic year, and the distinguished people in the fields of research and community service, and the winners of the Sharjah Islamic Bank for Scientific Research Award were honored.
In his speech, Dr. Ajami stressed that the university, under the direction of His Highness, continues to advance towards the ranks of international universities, by strengthening the scientific research system, and developing academic programs that are in line with modern digital and scientific developments, indicating that the university includes 88 research groups distributed over 13 research excellence centers.
He pointed out that the university preserved its pioneering position in the country in the field of scientific research, as it published 3,478 highly influential research in the “Scopes” international base during the year 2024, and ranked 53 globally in the quality of scientific research, and the 69th rank within the classification of “young universities” issued by the “Times for Higher Education”.
The university also achieved a historic achievement by obtaining the platinum classification within the Sustars Sustainability classification system, to be the first university in the Middle East to obtain this classification, and among the top 15 universities globally in this field.
For his part, Prof. Dr. Muammar Al -Tayyib, Deputy Director of the University for Scientific Research and Graduate Studies, reviewed the most prominent features of the university’s future trends, which include enhancing applied research related to the needs of society, and converting research results into applicable products through business incubators and technological parks, in addition to establishing innovation centers and entrepreneurship to support the knowledge economy.
He also stressed the importance of diversifying the sources of financing for scientific research, strengthening the research fellowship programs for the Emirati youth, and building strategic partnerships with prestigious international academic institutions, such as the International Institute of Schultec and the Chinese University of Tesngawa.
The forum witnessed the presentation of the main lecture by Professor Dr. Powell Obern, Vice President of McMaster University in Canada and the Dean of the College of Health Sciences, where he addressed in his lecture “Transformative Research in the Treatment of Asthma” the latest developments in biological treatments and clinical experiences, pointing to the results of recent studies in the use of alternative treatments for light asthma, including the antibody that targets the TSLP protein.
The forum included the presentation of a short film on the achievements of Sharjah University Research, in addition to presenting the statistics and outputs of the research centers, and the honoring of the bodies supporting the professorship chairs at the university, the most prominent of which are: the professor of Muhammad Ahmed bin Saeed Al Qasimi, the Sharjah Water and Water Authority, the General Authority of Civil Aviation, the Sharjah National Oil Corporation, and others.
A number of distinguished faculty members were also honored in the fields of teaching, community service and scientific research, as well as students who won the Sharjah Islamic Bank for Scientific Research Award, which was delivered by Mr. Jassim Al Balushi, head of the strategic management of the bank.
At the conclusion of the forum, the university director and the attendees toured the accompanying scientific exhibition, which presented a set of innovative applied research projects, which focus on providing practical and sustainable solutions to societal challenges.
