Amna Al -Dahhak: Pioneering efforts for the Emirates to reduce plastic pollution nationally and globally

Dubai, June 5 / WAM / His Excellency Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al -Dahhak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, confirmed that the UAE continues its leading and luminous efforts to reduce plastic pollution at the national and global levels.
Her Excellency said, on the occasion of World Environment Day, on the International Environment Day, we renew our commitment to protecting our environment and natural heritage, guiding the vision of the founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, “may God rest his soul”, who realized his vision of the close interconnection between the safety of the environment and the prosperity of society, and we aspire to build a future in which environmental systems are thrived and the wild and marine life is preserved, and it is a legacy that we all work As a society to build it.
She added that the International Environment Day comes this year to highlight the need to take collective measures to address plastic pollution, a major challenge that calls for urgent attention and unified efforts, noting that in the context of its response to this urgent issue, the UAE operates according to an integrated system aimed at proper and integrated management of plastic products and in response to this approach, the UAE will apply.
Her Excellency confirmed that from January 1, 2026, the import, production and trade of plastic products with a single use will be banned, pointing out that this procedure falls in the context of the gradual approach that the state started in 2024 by prohibiting the use of plastic bags with a single use, while this step confirms our determination and commitment to environmental responsibility to build a future free of waste and pollution.
Regarding the UAE International efforts to reduce the risk of plastic pollution, its Excellency said that in the context of our global efforts to reduce plastic waste, it addresses the “clean rivers” initiative – within the “Zayed Humanitarian Heritage” Foundation – plastic pollution in river systems in a number of countries, by empowering societies and stimulating the development of innovative solutions to clean the waterways from plastic waste.
She pointed out that the national policy of the circular economy is a major driver of this transformation in the Emirates, as it contributes to improving the use of resources in vital sectors such as green infrastructure, transportation, manufacturing, production and consumption responsible for food.
She pointed out that this policy gives priority to reducing plastic waste, encouraging innovative solutions to packaging and sustainable recycling, confirming the firm commitment to dangerous waste management, and to reduce plastic waste significantly at all levels.
Her Excellency sent a message to the UAE community, saying: As responsible individuals in our society, each of us falls mainly to contribute mainly to achieving the vision of our state, by participating in limiting the use of unnecessary plastic in our daily life, and to achieve this vision, this requires that each of us participate more effectively in the process of change, and to go with a steady pace towards building prosperous societies and a vibrant elastic environment.
She added that we must also preserve the integrity of the wild and marine environments that constitute an integral part of our lives, in order to ensure the continuation of our lives and the life of future generations.
Her Excellency called for continuing to focus on protecting ecosystems to ensure our lives continue primarily, guiding the slogan of the International Environment Day this year “to reduce pollution with plastic materials”, which constitutes an invitation to work for every member of our society, and through our work together, we can build a brighter and sustainable future for all.
