Gabon ends the Fisheries Convention with the European Union

Brussels on June 10 / WAM / The Gabonese authorities decided to put an end to the Fisheries Convention linking the country to the European Union.
In an official statement, the decision indicating the imbalance in this partnership was announced.
The agreement, which was renewed in 2007 and in 2021 for a period of six years, allowed European fleets to exploit the resources of fish fisheries in Gabon, but the authorities of this country said that the revenues generated are not compensated for the true value of the fish, nor for the monitoring costs they bear.
The local media emphasized that this interruption should pave the way for re -negotiation on a new basis, or to search for more in line with national priorities.
The Gabonese government intends to increase the contribution of fish fisheries to the country’s gross domestic product, by about 15%.
