“Ecoau” The Emirati initiative is adopting “the global sustainable aircraft market” as an annual actor

The Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has adopted, during its 235th session, the UAE initiative, “the global market for sustainable aviation – GSAM” as an official annual activity within the agenda of the activities of the organization, thus becoming an independent initiative for a member state that develops from a strategic vision to international organizational and administratively supported by ICAO.

According to a press release issued today, the initiative’s approval came as a culmination of qualitative efforts led by the UAE to consolidate the concepts of sustainability in the global aviation sector, and an affirmation of its ability to convert ambitious visions into effective platforms that make a real difference in the level of international policies and practices.

The UAE launched the “World Sustainable Aviation Market” initiative in conjunction with its hosting of the fourth ICAO seminar to support the “Giss” in Abu Dhabi during February 2025, where the first version of the initiative witnessed a wide interaction of international partners and participants from various governmental and private agencies, including airlines, manufacturers and organizational and financial bodies.

Abdullah bin Touq Al -Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Authority of Civil Aviation, said that the UAE continues, thanks to the directives of the rational leadership, its leadership in the civil aviation sector regionally and internationally, as this achievement embodies the advanced position that the UAE enjoys on the map of international civil aviation, and confirms its superiority in creating future solutions and making sustainable and innovative global initiatives that enhance the growth and competitiveness of this vital sector, It keeps pace with global development requirements, and we have succeeded in converting a national idea into a global institutional platform that supports ICAO goals and contributes to building a more efficient and flexible airline, in line with the best practices used globally.

For his part, Saif Muhammad Al -Suwaidi, Director General of the General Authority of Civil Aviation, stressed that the adoption of the “Global Performance Market for Sustainable Aviation” as an official annual activity by ICAO is the result of a national and international collective work that has continued for more than a year.

He added, we work according to an integrated vision that makes the UAE a global center to accelerate the shift towards a low -emission flight, and the “World Sustainable Aviation Market” initiative is a successful model for how to activate international partnerships in order to sustain this vital sector.

For their part, the members of the Council stressed that the UAE has a forward -looking vision in taking decisive steps towards achieving sustainability and promoting innovation, as it presented a model for the world to be followed in how to convert this vision into a tangible reality.

They praised the leadership role of the state in launching this platform and supporting the sustainability agenda in the aviation sector at the regional and global levels.

The “World Sustainable Aviation Market” initiative emerged as a pivotal tool in supporting the achievement of the long -term ambition of “LTAA” by reaching the net zero emissions in the aviation sector, by enhancing the use of sustainable aviation fuel “SAF” and the “LCAF” low -carbon flying “and activating the international financing platform” Finance Hub “.

The UAE presented this initiative in 2024 through its permanent mission to ICAO, with a clear goal of establishing a global market linking policies, technology and financing to support the flight of the aviation sector towards achieving net zero emissions.

The idea was widely supported, and it was converted into a realistic project through coordinated efforts between the General Authority of Civil Aviation, the Standing Mission of the State in Montreal, and a group of local and international partners.

Preparations are currently continuing to launch the second version of the “Global Sustainable Aviation Market”, which is expected to bring together participants from different countries of the world, with the aim of supporting the efforts of the ICAO to achieve its goal by reaching the net zero emissions by 2050.
