The launch of the Abu Dhabi plan to adapt to climate change for the environmental sector

Abu Dhabi, July 23/ WAM/ The Environment Authority – Abu Dhabi launched, today, “Abu Dhabi’s plan to adapt to climate change for the environmental sector (2025-2050),” a comprehensive road map based on scientific foundations, designed to protect systems and natural resources in the emirate from the effects of climate change, in an important step towards enhancing the ability to adapt to the effects of climate change.

This is the first leading plan of its kind in the emirate, and it is part of the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy 2023-2027, as well as in line with the National Climate Change Plan 2017-2050, and the business framework for adaptation with the global climate change that was established at the twenty-eighth parties (COP28), setting specific time-settings to plan adaptation across the main sectors.

His Excellency Dr. Sheikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary -General of the Environment Authority – Abu Dhabi, on this occasion, said that the launch of the Abu Dhabi plan to adapt to climate change for the environmental sector, represents a milestone in the future of the emirate, we go beyond the phase of the foresight and start taking decisive measures, to become more willing to face the effects of climate change with a firm commitment to protect our environment and natural heritage, and represents this plan A road map based on scientific foundations, with the aim of enhancing the elasticity of our natural resources, protecting biological diversity, and achieving water and food security.

She added that this achievement reflects their commitment to anticipating the future based on adaptation to the effects of the current and expected climate, as well as strengthening their efforts to achieve the national climatic goals of the UAE and the sustainable development goals by reducing environmental weaknesses and protecting environmental systems, and this plan contributes to the consolidation of Abu Dhabi’s position at the forefront of global climate work.

The adaptation plan for the environment sector focuses on groundwater, soil, and biological diversity that is extremely important environmental systems on human health in terms of achieving water security and promoting agricultural production in the long term, and the safety of the environmental system in general.

The plan defines with accurate risks assessments, a wide range of threats to climate change, along with 142 adaptation procedures that will be implemented by 2050, including 86 specific projects for implementation over the next five years, and these procedures include a set of technical and institutional institutional solutions.

The plan in the long term supports Abu Dhabi’s strategic ambition to preserve its natural heritage, as it contributes to enhancing national efforts in the transformation towards land and more sustainable land management systems, with the aim of reducing future environmental and economic risks and contributing to achieving the social and environmental stability of the emirate.

For her part, Sheikha Al Mazrouei, Executive Director of Policy and Integrated Ecosmented Sector, said that this plan establishes a new standard for environmental flexibility in the region, as it provides a clear path based on scientific foundations for the protection of natural resources in Abu Dhabi from the accelerated effects of climate change, and the plan was designed to be a forward -looking, where the latest data, expectations of climate developments, and harmonization of policies are merged To ensure the effectiveness of response, as part of a comprehensive national strategy, this plan enhances their long -term vision to protect environmental systems, sustain natural resources, and ensure the welfare of future generations.

The Environment Authority – Abu Dhabi led the process of developing this plan with the participation of more than 40 governmental and semi -governmental and academic entities and civil society institutions and youth.

The plan was designed to be dynamic as it includes integrated mechanisms for periodic review, involving all concerned authorities, and integrating new scientific results and climate expectations in line with the national strategic plan for biological diversity and other international obligations.

The plan is one of the four plans to be implemented within a broader adaptation strategy at the emirate level that will address the energy, health and infrastructure sectors, together to form a unified framework that guarantees the flexibility of vital systems and societies in Abu Dhabi.
