"Ahmed" The smallest child in the area survives a rare hepatic disease thanks to a family donation

Abu Dhabi, August 13/ WAM/ Emirati child Ahmed Yahya Al Yassi today became one of the world’s few survivors of a rare genetic disease thanks to the successful liver transplant operation that was performed last April in Abu Dhabi that lasted 12 hours. The process is classified among the most complicated procedures for children in the region, as a precise part of the donor liver is equipped to fit with the infant belly cavity.

Several months ago, the infant Ahmed faced a mysterious future after the appearance of an abnormal height in the liver enzymes, which raised the anxiety of the doctors and soon his health condition deteriorated, and after medical examinations, he was diagnosed with a rare birth disease in “glycosille” linked to the “Atp6AP1” gene, which is a highly scarce genetic disorder that does not exceed 25 cases in the world according to studies and international research, and when it is undergoing For the process of cultivation of liver, he was less than five months old and weighs only 4.4 kilograms, to become the youngest child to be subject to this procedure in the state. After his uncle’s wife donated him part of her liver and thanks to agriculture and faith in God, careful coordination between the medical team, and the family cooperated from the beginning, the child is currently growing well with a continuous improvement in liver function, receiving food support, immune follow -up and family guidance within A long -term care program supported by intensive care in the intensive care unit for children under the leadership of Dr. Kissava Ramkrichnan, a consultant and head of the unit, where the child stayed for a few days to receive the necessary care and ensure the stability of his condition.

Dr. Gawrab Sen, director of the Burjil program for multiple organ transplants, said that what makes this condition is exceptional not only the age and weight of the child, but its genetic scarcity and the lack of successful operations globally for such cases, and he stressed that the process was very accurate and took 12 continuous hours that included the surgery of the donor and the recipient, and the liver was formed to suit the size of the child, and every blood container was smaller than a tuberculosis stick, with almost no mistake.

He supervised the implementation of the operation in the medical city of Burjeel, Dr. Gourab Sen, with the participation of Dr. Jones Sharaji Matthew, the surgeon of organ transplantation in Burjeel Medical City with the children’s anesthesia team led by Dr. Ramamworth, supported by intensive care in the intensive care unit for children under the leadership of Dr. Kisava Ramakrichnan, a consultant and head of the unit.

The story of Ahmed embodies the prominent impact of organ donation and the role of family support in saving lives and preserving life, which is the goal on which the International Day for the donation of organ.
