Korea allocates $ 25.1 billion for research and development projects during 2026

On August 22/ WAM/ The government in the Republic of Korea announced today, Friday, a plan to allocate a record amount of 35.3 trillion Won “$ 25.1 billion for US dollars” for research and development projects during 2026, in a move aimed at promoting productivity and developing new growth engines.
The Korean “Yonhap” news agency reported that the decision was taken during a meeting of the Presidential Consultative Council for Science and Technology headed by President Lee J. Meong, noting that this amount, which is the highest of its kind, represents a 19.3% increase from the research and development budget allocated for this year of 29.6 trillion Won, according to the Ministry of Science, Information and Communications Technology.
Of the total amount, 2.3 trillion Won will be spent on converting the economy and society through artificial intelligence technology, and the government will spend 2.6 trillion Won on the development of renewable energy technologies, an increase of 19.1% over the current year, while 8.5 trillion Won will be allocated to support advanced industries, an increase of 29.9% over 2025.
The budget for research and development projects related to defense will increase by 25.3% on an annual basis to reach 3.9 trillion Won, and the government will encourage research in basic sciences by spending 3.4 trillion Won, an increase of 14.6% over this year, while an additional 1.3 trillion won to attract competitors from abroad, along with 4 trillion Won to enhance the capabilities of research institutes funded by the state.
