Support for intellectual disabilities with communication and technologies axis of a session in "We contain"

Sharjah, September 15 / WAM / International experts stressed that the real progress in supporting persons with mental disabilities is not measured by the number of sessions or tools used, but rather by their ability to communicate, express self, make decisions, and live a more independent life through support support techniques.

This came during a session entitled “We are talking, we participate, we are talking about: Ways to provide good support”, within the activities of the first day of the World Conference 2025 “We contain” hosted by Sharjah until September 17 at the Expo Center.

The session witnessed the participation of Anwar Obaid, a speech and language specialist, head of the Center for Interesting Disabilities in the Sharjah Human Services City and Camel Matthew, the expert of support technology and founder of the “Consort World” company, in addition to the self -advocate, Khawla Muhammad Al -Jowr (25 years).

Anwar Obaid pointed out that effective support for persons with intellectual disabilities depends on gradual empowerment and focus on the person, continuity, flexibility, cooperation, the use of appropriate tools, and sustainable financing, with the need to adopt evidence -based practices, and relationships based on respect.

For his part, Cameel stressed that good support includes advanced technical solutions and simple tools, in addition to non -technical means, pointing to the importance of enhanced and alternative communication, which allows people with disabilities to express the use of images, symbols, signs, movements, eye looks, sounds, and facial expressions.

As for Khawla Al -Jowder, a student in the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, she expressed her happiness to participate, using a device based on eye orders, which enabled her to interact and publish an article in the German language about her life, and capture the first “selfie” independently of her, considering these achievements as evidence of the impact of qualitative support in empowering individuals.
