Turk: The Israeli attack on Doha is an attack on regional peace and stability and a blow to the integrity of mediation operations

In an emergency meeting of the Human Rights Council in Geneva held today, Tuesday, Mr. Volker Turk said that targeting the parties participating in internationally supported mediation on its territory are undermined the main role of Qatar As a mediator and a facilitator of peace.

He added that it is never permissible to target civilians who do not participate directly in hostilities, adding that when states ignore the rules of war, “It undermines the protection of all civilians everywhere.”

Mr. Turk added that the Hamas delegation was present in Qatar to negotiate the ceasefire, which is “A vital step towards peace.”

He added: “Our hearts suffer from civilians in Gaza, the Israeli hostages and their loved ones, and arbitrary detainees in Israeli prisons and their families. The war without laws means in the future of cruelty and endless suffering for civilians, whether Palestinians or Israelis alike. This attack shows the urgent need to intensify member states their efforts, and few who did so.”

Destruction of a two -state solution

Mr. Turk confirmed that the Israeli attack on Doha coincided with other measures “Any hope of a two -state solution is destroyed – the only way for sustainable peace.” He referred to the displacement order for about one million people from Gaza City as part of a new stage of the Israeli attack on the Strip.

He also pointed to the “settlement project” in East Jerusalem, which was “in conjunction with the funeral of the dead in Doha”, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described as as “Wafa, the government’s promise to stop the establishment of a Palestinian state.” As stated in the speech of the Commissioner of Human Rights.

Volker Turk added: “This is the latest episode in a long series of illegal facts on the ground that brings the two -state solution closer and more than the point of no return.”

The High Commissioner said that nearly two years after “the horrific terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023” and the subsequent escalation of violence, “This massacre must stop.”

He added that member states are obligated to take concrete measures to stop the flagrant violations of international law, and called on them to stop the flow of weapons to Israel, which may violate the laws of war.

He said that countries should exercise the maximum pressure to the ceasefire, and to release all hostages and detainees arbitrarily, in addition to introducing sufficient humanitarian assistance to Gaza.

Qatar’s position

For her part, Mrs. Maryam Bint Ali Al -Misnad, the Qatari Minister of State for International Cooperation, said that the Israeli attack is not only a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of her country, but it is formed “A fatal violation of basic human rights,” Including the right to life, security, protection of children and education, and it reaches a level “State terrorism.”

She said that the Qatari mediation has contributed since October 7 to achieving concrete results, including the release of 135 hostages in peace, “which restored reassurance and hope to Israeli families.” She emphasized that targeting these efforts “does not only mean obstructing the path of negotiation, but also dispels the opportunities to save more lives and achieve peace.”

The Qatari minister said that this attack was not a single accident, but rather “Part of a broader campaign aimed at distorting the role of Qatar and obstructing its diplomatic efforts, and this was confirmed by the statements of the Israeli Prime Minister, who clearly declared the continuation of threats to other countries, in a serious escalation that warns of dragging the region and the world a systematic violation of international law. What happened in Doha can be repeated in any other capital.”
