The UAE participates in the 69th conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna

Vienna, September 17 / WAM / The United Arab Emirates participates in the 69th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which is held at the organization’s headquarters in the Austrian capital Vienna, from 15 to 19 September, under the slogan “global cooperation in the nuclear field”.

The delegation of the state is chaired by His Excellency Ambassador Hamad Al -Kaabi, the permanent representative of the UAE at the agency; The delegation includes national bodies concerned with the nuclear sector, such as the Federal Nuclear Control Authority and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation.

Al -Kaabi threw the state statement before the plenary session of the General Conference, during which he shed light on the close relations between the UAE and the agency, stressing that the country is preparing for the future of nuclear innovation by launching programs designed to assess the capabilities of advanced reactors, including small standard reactors, to accelerate the removal of carbon and integrate advanced nuclear technologies in the various sectors.

He said that the UAE confirms its firm commitment to a strong and sustainable partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency, noting that the Baraka Nuclear Energy Station has become an essential corner in the country’s energy system, taking into account future initiatives that focus on advanced nuclear technologies, safety, security and the prohibition of spreading.

He stressed that the UAE continues its efforts to benefit from peaceful nuclear technologies, through cooperation with the agency and its member states, especially since nuclear energy plays a vital role in promoting peace, prosperity and sustainable development all over the world.

The UAE delegation will hold a number of bilateral meetings with the international concerned authorities to discuss cooperation and exchange of opinions on topics related to nuclear and oversight policies and the sector.

The Federal Nuclear Control Authority intends to sign a number of agreements with international regulatory authorities that cover a wide range of topics, such as research and development, and exchange of information in the areas of nuclear safety and protection from radiation.

The delegation will participate in a meeting of senior nuclear safety and security officials, focusing on enhancing regulatory efficiency, encouraging flexible regulatory systems, and consolidating a sustainable regulatory environment through the exchange of good practices, in addition to participating in an event entitled: “Programs for Member States: Enhancing the effectiveness of guarantees through partnership”, reviews the contributions of the guarantee support program that aims to support the agency’s activities in the field of prohibiting nuclear spread.

The state delegation will also participate in the Supervisory Cooperation Forum, to exchange knowledge and organizational experiences, communicate with international partners to enhance best practices, develop coherent organizational frameworks for the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and contribute to global nuclear safety standards.
