In Britain, the first woman to lead the Evangelical Church after 1400 years

In a historical step, Britain, Sarah Mulali, appointed the new Archbishop of the new Canterbury, becoming the first woman to hold this position since its foundation more than 1400 years ago, according to Reuters.

This appointment comes after amendments to the church’s statute 11 years ago allowed women to take over. Thus, Molali becomes the honorary president of about 85 million followers of the Evangelical Church around the world, which highlights theological divisions with some conservative branches in African countries such as Nigeria, Kenya and Uganda.

This position makes Moulaly a leader of one of the few public fields in Britain that was confined to men, and she is the figure No. 106 who holds the position. The appointment decision comes with an official approval of King Charles, after Justin Willby’s resignation last November after a scandal related to a cover -up of child abuse.

The appointment reflects a major social and religious shift, and highlights the importance of empowering women in leadership positions within religious institutions, which is an indication of slow changes in the Evangelical Church and their relationship to the modern world.
