Sharjah…the launch of the World Space Week activities

Sharjah, 8 October / WAM / The activities of World Space Week 2025 were launched yesterday at the Sharjah Academy for Space and Astronomy Science and Technology, affiliated with the University of Sharjah, under the slogan “Living in Space” and will continue until October 10, providing a practical interactive experience in space and astronomy sciences to spread scientific knowledge in the space and astronomical fields and contribute to building a sustainable future.

Dr. Humaid Majoul Al Nuaimi, Director of the Academy, confirmed that the event reflects the Academy’s commitment to supporting national trends in innovation, scientific research and space exploration, and constitutes an educational message that embodies the UAE’s position in space exploration. He pointed out that this week’s celebration coincides with the anniversary of two prominent events in the history of space, namely the launch of the first satellite “Sputnik 1” in 1957 AD and the Outer Space Treaty in 1967 AD by a committee. The United Nations, which has established a global framework for the use of space for peaceful purposes.

He explained that the academy, through its advanced facilities, enables students and researchers to engage in distinguished scientific experiments and enhances community awareness of the importance of space science.

For her part, Fatima Mohammed Al Khatri, Director of the Sharjah Planetarium, stressed the importance of the participation of all segments of society, including researchers and students, in World Space Week to enhance understanding of the role of space in our daily lives, noting that the Academy provides educational and interactive programs that include specialized lectures, applied scientific workshops, and new astronomical displays, in addition to interactive stations that simulate the challenges of living in space, as it gives visitors the opportunity to interact directly with the latest Developments in space science and technology, inspiring the spirit of innovation and scientific research and contributing to building a conscious generation capable of contributing to the country’s march towards a promising space future.

On the sidelines of the World Space Week activities, the Sharjah Academy for Space and Astronomy Science and Technology signed a joint cooperation agreement with the Emirates Astronomy Society, signed by Dr. Hamid Majoul Al Nuaimi and Ibrahim Al Jarwan, President of the Society, with the aim of enhancing cooperation between the two sides in the fields of space and astronomy.

This agreement comes to activate joint scientific and cultural programs and activities, support research, studies, monitoring, mutual promotion of events, exchange experiences and knowledge, in addition to cooperation in issuing scientific and educational materials, creating twinning with astronomical and scientific clubs, and allocating a headquarters for the Emirates Astronomy Society within the academy.

This year’s week’s activities included a group of scientific activities, including new live performances at the Sharjah Planetarium aimed at exploring space environments, in addition to lectures presented by an elite group of space science and astronomy specialists.

The Academy will continue its program during the week by presenting a variety of scientific and astronomical activities, including special shows at the Sharjah Planetarium, interactive stations such as “Imagine Other Worlds” and “Time Capsule,” scientific workshops on exploring astrobiology, exploring the possibility of life outside Earth, and using artificial intelligence in classifying astronomical images, in addition to specialized lectures covering topics such as interstellar travel and high-energy cosmic radiation, and presenting… Practical exercises to simulate the life of astronauts.
