The UAE participates in the Ministerial Meeting on Energy Transitions of the G20 in South Africa

Cape Town, October 21 / WAM / The UAE, represented by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, participated in the G20 ministerial meeting on energy transitions, hosted by Cape Town in South Africa, where the UAE delegation was headed by His Excellency Engineer Sherif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs.
During the meeting, His Excellency affirmed the UAE’s support for the priorities of the G20 presidency aimed at achieving a safe, comprehensive and sustainable energy transition, noting the country’s commitment to enhancing global energy security and accelerating the transition towards clean sources that achieve sustainable development.
He reviewed the UAE’s most prominent achievements in expanding access to electricity and clean cooking, praising the role of the Barakah Peaceful Nuclear Energy Plant as one of the country’s most important strategic projects in the energy sector, as it is the first nuclear plant in the Arab world, and contributes to providing about 25% of the country’s electricity needs, while reducing more than 22.4 million tons of carbon emissions annually, which supports the country’s goals of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
His Excellency also reviewed the progress made in implementing the National Hydrogen Strategy 2050, and the UAE’s support for the G20 principles of sustainable manufacturing, pointing to the launch of the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance (GEEA) as a leading international platform for transforming commitments into tangible practical achievements, in light of the increasing interest of countries in joining this UAE initiative.
He stressed the UAE’s support for the Alliance of Sustainable Manufacturing Centers, and its active participation in its work to accelerate the transition towards low-carbon manufacturing, enhance clean supply chains and technology transfer.
He called for participation in the United Nations Water Conference hosted by the UAE next year, to strengthen the interconnection between the water and energy sectors and push innovative solutions to address the challenges of water and energy resilience at the global level.
Regarding the electrical interconnection axis, His Excellency affirmed the UAE’s commitment to sharing its expertise in the field of Gulf electrical interconnection, financing clean infrastructure projects, and benefiting from major international initiatives such as the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) to build flexible and sustainable energy networks that enhance development on the African continent.
Participation reflects the UAE’s commitment to the seventh goal of the Sustainable Development Goals, which is to ensure access to clean, safe energy at affordable prices for all. It also confirms the country’s pioneering role in accelerating the global transition towards clean energy and consolidating international cooperation to achieve a sustainable future and a low-emission economy.
