"Gulf Statistician" : Reliable statistics "vertebral column" For development and facing global challenges

Muscat, October 21 / WAM / Her Excellency Intisar bint Abdullah Al Wahaibiyya, Director General of the Statistical Center for the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries, stressed that reliable statistics form the backbone of any successful development strategy, and a solid pillar in confronting major global challenges such as sustainable development, climate change, and public health.

This came during a virtual session organized by the Center to celebrate World Statistics Day, entitled “Statistical Integration and Innovation in the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries: Towards High-Quality Data to Serve All,” in coordination with the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).

Al-Wahibiyya stressed that this year’s slogan emphasizes accuracy and reliability as a moral obligation and societal responsibility, and the transformative power of data to support policy-making and evidence-based planning.

During the session, the Gulf Statistical Center affirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with international and regional statistical offices, and consolidating the image of the Gulf Cooperation Council as a successful model in statistical integration.

In a working paper, the Center reviewed its journey in unifying statistical work, developing unified methodologies and standards, and launching integrated Gulf databases to support decision makers and policy makers in implementing sustainable development goals and national visions.

The session also included international participation, as the representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in the Sultanate of Oman presented a working paper on the importance of accurate data in guiding policies that put human well-being at the heart of their goals.
The Decision Support and Data Division at ESCWA presented a visual presentation on the “Arab Development Platform”, as an interactive tool that collects data and analyzes to support evidence-based decision-making in Arab countries.
