"Economy and tourism": 402.31 thousand national and international trademarks registered in the UAE by the end of September 2025

Dubai, October 21 / WAM / The Ministry of Economy and Tourism, during a media briefing at its headquarters in Dubai, reviewed the Cabinet’s decision regarding fees for trademark services provided by the Ministry, in the presence of His Excellency Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy and Tourism; His Excellency Dr. Abdul Rahman Hassan Al-Muaini, Assistant Undersecretary for the Intellectual Property Sector at the Ministry.

His Excellency Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, confirmed in a statement that the UAE, thanks to the directives of its wise leadership, has achieved tangible progress in developing an integrated legislative and regulatory system for intellectual property, and has given trademarks special importance as one of its basic pillars, by providing a competitive legislative structure to protect trademarks that allows them to grow and prosper, especially the issuance of a federal decree law. No. 36 of 2021 regarding trademarks and its executive regulations, which constituted a qualitative shift by establishing an advanced and safe business environment to support and develop trademarks in the country based on the best practices followed in this regard.

His Excellency added: The Cabinet’s decision regarding fees for trademark services provided by the Ministry represents an important step aimed at enhancing the country’s attractiveness for international investments, attracting international companies, supporting owners of small and medium enterprises and helping them grow, as well as people of determination, improving the quality of services provided to customers and accelerating procedures, which contributes to facilitating the processes of registering and following up trademarks. This decision also comes within the framework of the country’s ongoing efforts to support and develop the intellectual property sector according to the best possible standards. established practices.”

His Excellency pointed out that the Ministry of Economy and Tourism registered 19,957 national and international trademarks during the first half of this year, with a growth rate of 129% compared to 8,711 trademarks in the first half of 2024, which reflects the remarkable growth in trademark registration in the UAE markets.

For his part, His Excellency Abdullah Al Saleh said: The Ministry has worked continuously to launch many national initiatives for intellectual property and trademarks, in cooperation and coordination with government and private agencies at the local and international levels, based on its vision of the importance of this vital sector in enhancing the growth and competitiveness of the national economy and accelerating the transition towards a new economic model based on knowledge and innovation.

He added: Among the most prominent of these initiatives is the provision of the “Geographically Specific National Product” registration system, as the first national service of its kind concerned with protecting Emirati products and their trademarks associated with a specific geographical origin, and joining the Madrid Protocol in 2021, which allows small and medium enterprise owners to register their trademarks locally and expand internationally, and launching the “One Day Mark” initiative, which It aims to accelerate trademark registration processes, enhance the ease of digital transformation of services, launch a forum for empowering local brands through innovation Beyond 71, and rely on artificial intelligence technologies in the Ministry’s services related to intellectual property, including trademarks.”

For his part, His Excellency Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Muaini stressed that the decision to amend fees for trademark services constitutes a pivotal step aimed at enhancing the flexibility and efficiency of the work system for these services, obtaining them in a short time, and raising the competitiveness of the business environment in the country, in addition to enhancing government performance in order to provide the best services in the world, in line with the axes of the “We Are the Emirates 2031” vision, which aims to make the country the most pioneering and superior system by the next decade.

The decision contributes to enhancing the environment of innovation and creativity in the country and protecting the owners of national and international trademarks. It also supports the creation of a new path for the process of studying the trademark registration application in the first stage of the application submission process, so that the trademark is examined in just one day.

The decision stipulates that projects and small and medium enterprises that are members of the National Program for Small and Medium Enterprises and Enterprises are granted a partial exemption of 50% from trademark service fees. This step coincides with the launch of the national campaign, “The UAE is the Entrepreneurial Capital of the World,” and supports achieving its goals in enhancing the country’s competitiveness as an incubating environment for small and medium enterprises at the regional and global levels.

In addition, the decision granted people of determination a complete exemption from paying these fees, which reflects the state’s efforts to enable owners of small and medium enterprises and people of determination to establish new brands, and support them in accessing a more flexible and efficient business environment.

According to the decision, fees are collected for one category if the application contains one category, and for each category separately in the event of multiple categories, even if they are submitted within one application. The decision specified fees for 28 trademark services in the Ministry, which included amending the fees for some services, merging them, and creating new services, the most prominent of which is the infringement complaint service, 2,250 dirhams, and the grievance service for the person against whom the dismissal decision is opposed, 7,500 dirhams.

The decision approved 7 new services for trademarks, which are a geographical indication registration service with a financial value of 6,500 dirhams, a trademark inspection service in one day with a value of 2,250 dirhams, a grievance service against the decision to cancel a trademark with a value of 5,000 dirhams, a service for converting a national trademark to an international one with a value of 400 dirhams, a service for requesting renewal of the registration of a trademark registration agent (a branch of a foreign company) for 7,500 dirhams, and a grievance service against a rejection decision. Registering the mark is 5,000 dirhams, and the service of requesting examination and study of the claim is 2,250 dirhams.

The decision included merging the fees for four services related to renewing a trademark registration, as the fees were as follows: renewing the trademark protection period during the last year of the protection period with a value of 5,750 dirhams, renewing the trademark protection period within six months from the date of the end of the protection period with a value of 6,500 dirhams, renewing the protection period for the monitoring and examination mark during the last year of the protection period with a value of 8,250 dirhams, and renewing the protection period for the monitoring and examination mark within six months from The end date of the protection period is 9,750 dirhams.

In light of this decision, the Ministry continues its efforts to support the growth and prosperity of the intellectual property sector in the UAE, especially since the total number of national and international trademarks registered in the UAE is 402,311 trademarks until the end of September 2025.

The Ministry confirms that work is continuing to provide more opportunities and horizons for trademark owners, support the environment of innovation and creativity in the country and enhance its competitiveness in the fields and activities of intellectual property at the regional and international levels, which contributes to enhancing the growth of the national economy and achieving sustainability and diversity in economic sectors, and in line with the objectives of the “We Are the Emirates 2031” vision to consolidate the country’s position as a global center for the new economy.
