The 30th meeting of the Council "Irina" Tomorrow will review the priorities for energy transformation

Abu Dhabi, 29 October / WAM / The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) will review, during the 30th meeting of its Council in Abu Dhabi tomorrow, the progress made in its work and discuss collective priorities to accelerate the pace of the global energy transition.

More than 350 representatives will participate in the meeting, reviewing the progress made and priorities in support of the global goal of tripling renewable energy by 2030.

The meeting comes within the framework of ongoing preparations for holding the Thirty Conference of the Parties (COP30) and the sixteenth meeting of the General Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

The two-day meeting is focused on achieving the global goals set out in the UAE Agreement reached at COP28, following the agency’s recent launch of its latest progress tracking report at the pre-COP meeting in Brazil, which confirmed that despite increasing scope for renewable energy, progress made is insufficient to stay on track to meet global goals. !

In his capacity as Chairman of the 30th meeting of the Council of the International Renewable Energy Agency, His Excellency Francisco Chacon Hernandez, Permanent Representative to the International Renewable Energy Agency and Ambassador of Costa Rica to the UAE, said that the Council is meeting at a time of renewed global opportunities ahead of the COP30, and Costa Rica’s experience shows that an energy system based on renewable energy sources can coexist with social progress, economic resilience and environmental management, noting that the scale of the current challenge requires working collectively, connecting regions together, exchanging knowledge, and accelerating the pace of action.

For his part, Francesco La Camera, Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency, confirmed that the world is closer to closing the gap than ever before, although the addition of 582 gigawatts of renewable energy in 2024 is still less than what is required to achieve the goal of tripling renewable energy, but it represents a new world record in the use of renewable energy for the third year in a row, which reduces the gap between what has been achieved and what is required.

La Camera added that governments must show leadership and make COP30 in Brazil a milestone for renewable energy. With the deadline for new NDCs to be submitted before COP30, the 30th meeting of the IRENA Council represents an important moment to underscore the need for greater collective ambition. !

Program discussions address the role of “clean manufacturing” in promoting sustainable development; Including by enhancing resilience in supply chains for critical materials and renewable energy. The Council will be informed of the latest developments on the agency’s efforts to enhance regional cooperation. !

Members are also scheduled to exchange national experiences, explore options for enhancing international cooperation, and discuss ways to expand access to investments needed to raise the level of use of renewable energy.

It is expected that the results reached will contribute to enriching the deliberations of the sixteenth meeting of the Agency’s General Assembly, where ministers and high-level representatives will meet in Abu Dhabi on January 11 and 12, 2026. As the first energy ministerial meeting of the year, the General Assembly will evaluate the progress achieved globally and set priorities for the energy transition for the coming year.
