Green tea.. Beware of its interactions with these supplements and medications

Green tea is known for its richness in powerful antioxidants, especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which contributes to promoting heart health and weight control. However, recent studies have warned of its interactions with some supplements and medications, which may reduce their effectiveness or increase their side effects, according to the Times of India.

Iron supplements:

Consuming green tea with meals rich in iron or with its supplements may reduce its absorption, because it contains tannins and polyphenols that reduce ferritin levels in the blood, especially in women and the elderly.

B vitamins:
Caffeine and polyphenols in green tea may hinder the absorption of vitamin B12 and folic acid, which are necessary for cell growth. Experts recommend taking supplements at a different time than drinking green tea.

Blood thinning medications and supplements:
Green tea contains amounts of vitamin K, which may reduce the effectiveness of medications such as warfarin. Combining it with supplements such as fish oil or ginseng may negatively affect blood clotting. Therefore, you should consult a doctor before introducing it into your daily routine.

Stimulant supplements:
Because it contains caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine, green tea may cause rapid heartbeat or high blood pressure when taken with stimulant supplements. Some studies have shown that it may change the effectiveness of heart, cholesterol, and blood pressure medications.

While its health benefits remain certain, the appropriate timing for drinking it – at least an hour away from taking medications and supplements – may ensure that its benefits are achieved without side effects.
