"National Meteorology" Participate in the celebration of" World Tsunami Awareness Day"

Abu Dhabi, 5 November / WAM / The National Center of Meteorology is participating in the celebration of “World Tsunami Awareness Day”, which is held this year under the slogan “Be Prepared for Tsunami – Invest in Tsunami Preparedness”, with the aim of enhancing community awareness of the danger of this natural phenomenon and raising the level of preparedness to reduce its effects on lives and property.
Tsunami waves are considered one of the most dangerous natural disasters, as they can cause widespread destruction and massive human and material losses, in addition to their long-term environmental and social impacts. This day, which was approved by the United Nations General Assembly, is the fifth of November of each year, to remind societies of the importance of awareness, advance preparation, and rapid response when such disasters occur.
His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Al Mandoos, President of the World Meteorological Organization and Director General of the National Meteorological Center, said that the World Tsunami Awareness Day represents an important platform to highlight the vital role played by meteorological and seismic bodies and centers and early warning centers around the world, pointing to joint work to enhance regional coordination and cooperation and raise awareness of the population, especially in coastal areas exposed to tsunami risks, due to the huge economic, social and environmental impacts of this phenomenon.
His Excellency explained that investing in early warning systems, drawing evacuation maps, and implementing regular training exercises is an effective approach to reducing human losses and protecting development gains in the long term, noting that community preparedness and continuous awareness contribute to enhancing the ability of communities to withstand in the face of natural disasters.
The center is participating in a project to strengthen the tsunami early warning system for the countries of the northwest Indian Ocean, in addition to its participation in regional workshops aimed at unifying concepts and operational procedures, enhancing evacuation plans, and the role of the media in disseminating warnings.
He is also keen to implement training and awareness programs in cooperation with relevant national authorities, and participates in the regional field exercise IOWave25, which is a tsunami simulation exercise aimed at raising community preparedness and promoting a culture of prevention and preparedness.
The Center stressed that participation in celebrating World Tsunami Awareness Day reflects the UAE’s commitment to protecting society, ensuring the safety of its residents in the face of natural disasters, and enhancing international and regional cooperation to ensure sustainable progress in the field of early warning.
