The original polio virus was detected in wastewater in Germany without any infections recorded

The Robert Koch Institute announced Today, the German Institute for Infectious Diseases detected the original composition of the polio virus (WPV1) in a wastewater sample in Germany, in the first discovery of its kind in more than 30 years.
The institute explained in a statement that this monitoring does not pose a risk to the population, as no human infections have been recorded, noting that the high rates of vaccination against polio in the country provide strong protection from the spread of the virus. The World Health Organization stated that this discovery is the first of its kind in Europe since 2010, stressing that no country is completely safe from the return of the virus despite global eradication efforts.
It is noteworthy that Germany began in 2021 a periodic program to monitor viruses in wastewater, and this discovery is the first environmental indicator of the presence of the original polio virus in the country since the launch of the program.
