DB World begins operations in the port of Tartous

Dubai Ports World Group, “DB World”, began its operations in the port of Tartous, after the official handover from the General Authority for Land and Sea Ports of Syria, and welcomed the entry into service of the new port tug, bearing the name “Al-Fateh”.

The group stated, in a statement yesterday, that this step represents a major milestone within the framework of the DB World concession agreement in the port of Tartous, which extends for 30 years, and includes a planned investment worth up to three billion dirhams, which is considered one of the largest foreign investments in the logistics services sector in Syria in recent years, noting that the concession agreement was designed to support the economic recovery of Syria, and transform Tartous into a highly efficient commercial and logistics center.

She explained that port tugs are used to guide large ships in limited spaces and as first response assets in cases of maritime emergencies, as tugs support safe and reliable docking operations for ships, which improves control of the process of approaching berths, reduces waiting times, and raises the safety level of the port.

She added that the length of the newly arrived “Al-Fateh” locomotive is 22 meters, and has a pulling force of up to 50 tons with approved fire-fighting water cannons.

DB World is currently conducting a comprehensive assessment of the port’s infrastructure, including equipment, berth readiness, yard facilities and warehouses. This initial phase includes technical surveys, operational studies and design planning to develop a detailed roadmap for redevelopment.

In the near term, work will focus on deepening the marine access channels, basins and berths to reach the optimal design depths. The rehabilitation and replacement of existing handling equipment, in addition to the introduction of new specialized assets, will enable the port to meet the growing demand for bulk cargo and general cargo.

DB World will introduce its own advanced digital platforms to enhance operational efficiency and transparency, and employee training and process improvement programs will be implemented in parallel to raise productivity levels and reduce ship waiting times to reach international standards.

DB World Tartous CEO, Fahd Al-Banna, said: “We have embarked on the process of transforming the port of Tartous into a world-class maritime gateway, and through close cooperation with the Syrian government and the General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, we are committed to applying DB World’s global expertise to build a modern and digitally advanced port that enhances trade movement, provides opportunities, and consolidates Tartous’s position as a major commercial hub in the Eastern Mediterranean region.”
