Trump: We have made great progress with Venezuela to stop the flow of drugs

US President Donald Trump hinted that he had made a decision about what he would do regarding Venezuela, after the United States and Washington strengthened its military deployment in Latin America as part of a campaign that it says is aimed at combating drug trafficking, but raises fears of a large-scale conflict.

Trump said to reporters while traveling to his resort in Florida on Friday. "I kind of made up my mind".

He added "I can’t tell you what it is, but we’ve made a lot of progress with Venezuelawith regard to stopping the flow of drugs".

For weeks, the Trump administration began launching strikes in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean targeting boats that it says are smuggling drugs. It also deployed air and naval capabilities, most notably the aircraft carrier Gerald Ford, which was announced to have arrived off the coast of the region on Tuesday.

Trump’s statements came hours after his Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, announced the start of a military operation in Latin America, which he called "Southern Spear"stressing that it targets drug traffickers, without providing additional details about it.

Over the past weeks, Washington launched strikes in international waters targeting about 20 boats that it says are used to smuggle drugs, killing at least 76 people, according to American data.

Washington did not provide any evidence that these boats are used to smuggle drugs.

The American strikes sparked international criticism and fears that the United States is its long-term target. The farthest is the overthrow of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
