The future of Syria belongs to all components, and the Syrians have an opportunity for peace and unity

The American envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, said that the future of Syria belongs to all components, and that the Syrians have an opportunity for peace, unity, and prosperity.

Barak pointed out during a panel discussion at the Doha Forum in the Qatari capital that Damascus achieved epic and heroic achievements over the course of one year, after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024.

The American envoy stressed: What we must all do is help them obtain their rights, encourage them, and allow them to form the kind of government and comprehensive system that they, the Syrians, want to form.

He called for avoiding Western expectations that would prevent Syria from achieving stability within itself, noting that since Sykes-Picot, almost every decision that the West has imposed on the region instead of allowing the region to develop on its own has been a mistake. Every time we intervene, whether it is Libya or Iraq or all the places we visited to try to establish a colonial mandate, it was not very successful and we end up paralyzed.

The American envoy said that resolving the situation on the Syrian and Israeli borders is a process that requires small steps.

Barak, who also serves as the US ambassador to Ankara, praised the role of Türkiye and Qatar in reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
